PATTY BEECHAM

BIOGRAPHY

Patty Beecham is an emerging Australian writer who lives between Brisbane and Maleny in her retirement, happily married and proud mother of two sons. Her writing reflects contemporary everyday experiences of family, legacy, ageing, and retirement, told with warmth, honesty, and a distinct sense of humour.

She is currently working on a collection of connected stories, exploring the complexities of her adult son moving back home with his young child. This work examines resilience, second chances, and the emotional experiences of learning to live together again as a multi-generational family.

Patty has always written, and since retiring, has published two poetry collections, The Poetry of Patty Beecham and These Days I Live in Brissy, as well as two memoirs, Growing Up, Rocky and Growing Up, Patty. Her poetry has been featured in the international magazine Prism, earning several awards including the Professor Bruce Dawe, AO, Patronal Prize. Her articles have also appeared in The Courier-Mail, ABC Brisbane, Crikey, and various anthologies.

Memoir holds her heart. She is drawn to its honesty, vulnerability, and the rich quirks of real life, which she finds far more compelling than fiction.

Patty’s writing style is observational, whimsical, and gently playful, focusing on the small, meaningful moments often overlooked. Her current work, Boomerang Son, is a personal exploration of family, home, and starting again, including the quiet redemption found in helping raise her grandson.

She is a member of the Beerwah Writers Group and Women Writers Queensland. Patty was also Australia’s first Roving Reporter for ABC Breakfast Radio and the country’s first Funeral Photographer. When she’s not writing, she can often be found pulling weeds at her grandson’s school: another ordinary moment that, in her hands, might just become a story.
